Easy Songs for Guitars

If you're just starting out with guitar, the best thing you can do is grab some early success to put wind in your sails. Knowing a some notes and their names useful, but early on, what you need most is courage and motivation to keep going.

So my suggestion? Learn some easy guitar songs. It's a win-win situation because you get some gratification and those who will listen to you will appreciate listening to music rather than just your practice scales (important, but not fulfilling while you're learning them). So easy songs are the ticket for any new guitar player.

The good news is, there are lots of songs that only use a few easy, open chords. Open chords are chords that don't require you to move your hands way up the neck. Many of the strings in open chords are played without having to fret them (called "open strings").

Here are some easy songs for guitars you can play with only a few open chords:

Is there a REAL Top-10 Guitar Solos?

I recently found a couple videos on Youtube that claimed to list the "Top 10" and "Top 25" Guitar solos in order of "topness".

The trouble was... I could never agree to them. MY LIST is different! My age (52), my experience as a songwriter, and of course my personal tastes demand of me that I engage in a "throw down" with these list makers, and present my own list.

Yes, I admit right now that when I think "great guitar solos", I don't think "most acrobatic solos" or "most famous guitar players' solos" or "fastest solos". Instead, I think "tastiest solos". By tastiest, I mean solos that scoop you up and take you someplace, with or without your cooperation. So...introducing...

MY OWN TOP-10 TASTIEST GUITAR SOLO LIST:

10. Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd, played by David Gilmour)

9. Satch Boogie (Joe Satriani)

8. Sweet Home Alabama (Skynard)

7. Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)

6. Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas--all 3 solos)

OK, I have to admit that I was tempted to even put some guitar riffs (non-solos) in there because of their effect on me when they crank up (Things like "Back in Black" or "Baracuda"), but they had to be real solos to make this list. When Do We Get to the Music?

The 10 year old sits down at the piano with a forlorn look that seems to cover his entire body. He's been in this seat every day (or at least every few days) for years now. He makes progress, but it feels like his teacher is pushing a wet noodle uphill.

How common is this? I don't know, but my quick answer might be "too". My wife took piano lessons for 12 years and doesn't play anymore (AT ALL). Something must have been amiss for her to stay in that seat for all those years and never "get music".

What if there were a few "key ideas" that could impart to a piano student some drive and sense of power? Something that would be wind in the sails so crucial connections are made. Would that not be an important set of tools? I think so. I recently read some things that caused my mind to run down this line of thinking.

Here are some ideas that could cause the piano learner to take the task to heart:

1. The Command Connection—to be exact, command of technique and its necessary connection to your ability to make music. Scales, triads, chords, and arpeggios are not just isolated exercises (things to do with your fingers everyday)—they are building blocks for creating real music, as any composer will tell you. The learner must be made to see that these musical building blocks are going somewhere wonderful! They are what allows us actually understand the music we encounter.

Of course, technique involves a piano player's physicality, such as finger strength, good fingering habits, finger crossing, arm weight, hand and arm stability, and the integration of these over time into an efficient playing setup. Practicing a scale ad infinitum in private makes more sense if you realize that it shows up in passage in a Beethoven Sonata. It becomes your power...your super-power to move hearts. All that "fingering exercise" makes more sense when you realize it has a beautiful musical context.

2. Get Drawn into the Detail—There is a rabbit-hole of precision that can bridge the gap between just "getting through it" and really "owning" a piece of music... but it is a rabbit hole that a student must allow himself to follow. Have you heard many perfectly executed 4-octave arpeggios lately? They are becoming rarer and rarer these days. Spending time on these technical exercises can teach you to listen to the details of playing and develop an acute sense of awareness. This awareness eventually teaches you how to be "in the moment" no matter what you're playing.

3. Create a Little Creativity—It is a very common assumption that piano technique is necessarily boring. But we must find a way to make the "daily dose" a little more fun (in other words, more musical). Why not mix basic technique exercises with some fun musical concepts? Experimentation in piano practice? Egads!

Here are just a few ideas:

    • Mess around with the dynamics, pp to ff, play with crescendo and diminuendo

    • Mess with articulations—try playing scales with different articulations. Vary or alternate between stacato and legato.

    • Change up the order within a practice session—Re-arrange the order of exercises by type (ie. octave scales, triads, etc.) or key. Play them all and note the problems. Try a practice working only on problem patterns. Try warming up with technique or cool down with it.

    • Metronome madness—switch the downbeat so it's opposite the metronome click. Try cutting the metronome speed in half and keep playing the piece at the same speed, using the click to designate only half the beats.

4. Build real confidence—On a performance night you'll find yourself waiting backstage. Have you done your work well enough to be confident? If you haven't, you'll face genuine performance anxiety and it can be paralyzing. There's only one way to deal with it...and that's long before the performance. Do your preparation, both with the specific music you're performing and the associated technique that undergirds it. That's the only way to feel the deep confidence of being able to play the music and your instrument with true freedom.

I believe these are important concepts that deserve your attention now, so you won't lose heart before you connect all that "piano technique" to real music. You know what I'm talking about... that stuff in your heart that longs to come out when you sit down at the piano. Good luck and good technique.

Thinking in Intervals vs Thinking in Notes

Music and Math are attached at the hip it seems. Pitch frequencies are certainly expressed in the purest of math terms. And the shorthand system for pitches and their relationships is also expressed by the very simple math of what we call "intervals".

There is an entire system called the "Nashville Numbers" that assign the numbers 1 thru 7 to the notes of a major scale. The chords based on those notes are then refered to by those numbers.

So if you change keys, nothing about the notation changes when you're using the Nashville Number system.

The same principles can be applied to single notes. It just requires a change of thinking... or better yet it requires a simpler way of thinking.

You go from memorizing notes to memorizing intervals (the simple mathematical relationship of the notes) in any particular scale or chord.

For instance, if I first played the Pentatonic scale trying to always know what note I'm playing, it would be a torturous path to me when I started trying to solo. I would have to know all the notes in the scales, and where those notes are located on the fretboard. I would also need to know what relationship they have to the root. It would take too long for me to calculate this all out in my head.

So I might find myself sticking to patterns that are boxy.

But what if I started just "thinking the intervals" as I play scales and patterns? For instance, with a pentatonic scale I say to myself "Root, Fifth, Fourth, etc." This becomes much easier than memorizing all note names. Because I know that chords are built off of intervals, it's going to make everything much easier.

If I know that I am soloing against an A, D, and E chord sequence - and I know where a root note for A, D, and E is located - I can quickly find a fret pattern that works with that root note - and then the intervals I need are automatic. No need to find note names or do any mental translation or anything - I just play intervals.

For example, I know that in a Dominant Seventh chord you should solo using primarily the root, third, fifth, and minor seventh - and I know where all those are located in all the fret patterns now. I might have to slow down significantly to tell you every note I am playing, but I can play them more intuitively when thinking in intervals.

Even on songs that I learn from sheet music - I quickly convert them into intervals after I get to the point of having them memorized. This allows me to play them in any key starting from nearly any position on the guitar.

And a side benefit is that once I'm thinking intervals and numbers (instead of chord and note letter names), I can change keys instantly, painlessly... because the intervals are all the same relationships, regardless of the key I'm in.

We launched our latest instructional dvd course last month, Learn & Master Painting.

So far, the response has been great! The comments and testimonials have started coming in!
Today I got an email that pointed me to a thread on the Learn and Master Painting Forum in which the first students shared their first works of art!

Learn and Master Spotlight Series, Blues Guitar with Steve Krenz

The next course from Legacy Learning Systems will be the first of the Learn & Master Spotlight Series, Blues Guitar with Steve Krenz.

Today I received some photos from Steve from the last part of the shooting.

Part of the course was shot at the Rutledge in Nashville, one of the most famous live music venues in Nashville, with a live band.

We still do not have an exact timetable for the release of the course, but I will certainly be updating all of you very soon. We are looking to this!

Remember, this is only the FIRST of what will be the Learn & Master Spotlight Series, which will include various other specific topics in the future.

Moldovan Orphans With Learn & Master Guitar

Earlier this year I posted a picture about a young boy with a guitar and a copy of Learn & Master Guitar that we donated to Watermelon Ministries.

Below is a wonderful picture of two young orphans in Moldova, a former Soviet Republic and the poorest country in Europe, with one of the Learn & Master Guitar courses that we donated earlier this year. I just had to share it…always brings a smile to my face!
